Is it legal to write a book inspired by a movie?

I think it was last week when I went and saw The Purge. I thought the movie was alright; I enjoyed it over all. However, the concept of it was what I thought was really interesting, and over the past few days I've been piecing a story together for my own idea. I don't want to use any of the characters from the movie, or the setting, but I do want to include the annual all-crimes-are-legal thing. At the moment, I'm planning and writing this out for fun, but if I were looking to publish it in the future could I do this legally?
 
Being inspired by something is fine. Copying is protected by copyright.
