Is it normal to go through 2 wheel bearings on my car?

The front driver side wheel bearing on my 2003 intrepid went bad about 2 years ago and I had it replaced by a mechanic who did it in his backyard for $50. The part was about $70. There was no noise after the repair and all was good.

Then it went bad again a few months ago. I replaced it again, this time at a auto repair shop because, maybe it wasn't done right the first time??? This time it was $300.

I'm not about to sink any more cash into it without knowing if this is the actual solution.

Symptoms are, squealing when I turn to the left, sometimes to the right but mostly left and a whrrrrr sound from the left hub. It's not my power steering fluid because the levels are good. Can it be anything else or am I just that unlucky to keep getting bad bearings out of the box?
