Is it possible to hear my neighbor's smoke detector?

I have been hearing a beeping in my new apartment for the past 2-3 days. I know it's a smoke alarm, and it goes off once every 30 seconds or so, so I'm guessing it needs new batteries. I've searched the whole place, but the only smoke alarm we have is fine. Is it possible it's on the other side of the wall in my neighbor's apartment? I don't know if I'd be able to hear it or not....all I know is that it's slowly driving me crazy!!
