is it possible to use a 2004 cavalier fuel pump on a 2002 cavalier? both 4 cyl.?

my fuel pump went out (2002 cavalier 2.2) and i got a fuel pump off of a 2004 cavalier (which i believe is a 2.2) the thing is, the pump works, but my car starts up and then slowly sputters and dies, what could be causing this problem, and what actions would i take to fix the problem?
