Tinnitus, most often caused by hearing loss...

I get that a lot

ear ringing is associated with age related loss of hearing, head or neck injury, dental and head surgeries, and disorders life multiple sclerosis, thyroid disorder, vitamin b12 deficiency, lyme diseases, repeated exposure to loud noises, stress or trauma, sinusitus or allergy, some antibiotics, antihistaminesmeniere's disease.

Areason that people can hear ringing sound even though there is no external source is that when the tiny auditory hairs in the cochlea get bent or broken due to loud or udden noise. In a normal setting, these tiny hairs move when a sound is detected in the inner ear, and electricle impulses are discharged through the auditory nerve, which the brain interprets a sound. However, when these hairs get broken or bent they send electrical impulses randomly to the brain, then the brain nterprets these impulses as sound even thought there is no external source, this is called tinnitus

I once read that ringing in the ear is a sign of hearing loss but I think that's if it's a constant ringing
