is it safe to get a mid-90's BMW or Mercedes?

I see a lot of them for sale, and at really good prices, but I hear that i heard BMWs and Mercedes from the like 1985-1995 (the years Im looking at) have a lot of problems, and have to go to the garage a lot.

Also how well built is a 1998 Infiniti Q45? would it give me a lot of problems?
