Is it wise to invest in a notebook vs. a laptop? Or is a netbook ok for

emails/work-related websites?need dvd? Basically I need something to check emails --mostly from work, fill out 'paperwork' online for work and perhaps a dvd option to treat myself to a show to watch when I ride the train to NYC.
BUT I want something kinda small [not tiny], lightweight, and doesn't cost a fortune, spending just a tiny few dollars per month for service fees. [haha, am I dreaming now?]
