Is my dad selfish or what?

My dad always is saying that America need to mind there business. He said that about War World 2 (don't ask why), Vietnam,and the staving kids in Africa. He don't think we should help other country when they are in trouble. Even in America was in term oil he would still say those same words. I never agree with him he is not a caring person for all, funny for a person who choice not to work
 
I think your Dad is referring to the old adage "God helps those who help themselves" I kind of agree with him too.
 
your dad is being a cold-hearted realist. if America minds its own business, and does not help other countries in need, it can spend more effort on its own needy people. In some cases, minding your own business is good -there are some things America does not need to be involved in.

But when he talks about not helping starving African kids, tell him that other countries will look down on the US as being selfish and uncaring, as well as perhaps weak because it does not have the resources to help the less fortunate.

I understand how you feel, though. my dad is the same way
 
Think of it this way....
You have fallen can you really help another fallen person up before you help yourself.

And of your side...
You see a child abandoned on the side of the road while you are driving your car do you help him? I would be an inconvenience to you but it's worth it.

Your dad and others like him may be on to something. We should temporarily cease all involvement and intervention in foreign matters, including financial help. Publicly announce the plan, and put it up for a vote every six months in the senate, as to whether we should continue it. This will educate us as to whether we do more harm than good, give other countries an opportunity to resolve their own matters, and remind countries that despise us, how we truly do look out for them, and how crucial a player we are in the scheme of things. Whats the worst thing that can happen to us? We save money? Our troops are safe at home? No one can blame us for the outcomes of their situations? They'll hate America?
 
well, im not sure how to answer that, because i dont really think its a question. but fathers and sons never really agree on many things, its natural, sorry. i know how much it sucks. i have little things like that with my dad too.
 
Yes he is selfish and sounds like a lazy bum who wants to sit on his fat butt and collect money from the government. Any money spent on another cause would be seen by him as money being taken out of his pocket. Guess he feels that by living in America he is entitled to suck the welfare system dry.
 
I just think sometimes being idle at home, brings all these kinds of conversations.. have you heard of the saying "Empty mind is a devil's workshop". So you don't get yourself involved into all this. Plus America will not do as he says; so why bother.

But all this shows that you and your father needs to have more open conversations, looks like he is a bad listener. Try to improve your relationship with your dad, more of a kind whereby he listens and understands you and vice-versa.
 
Your dad isnt selfish, he is smart. America should stay out of other countries affairs. Yes if another country asks for help that is one thing, but usually America barges in like a bull in a china shop and makes things worse. Also America only helps countries that it can get something from. America invades Iraq ( the Iraqi people never asked for your help) but ignores the attrocities going on in the Sudan when they ask for help. Do you know why? Because the Sudan is not rich in oil thats why.
 
Sounds like your dad has some deep issues from his past which only he can choose to heal from. It is sad because he really is missing out on so much, especially his son.
 
he thinks like a lot of people that America doesn't take care of it's own. I agree that we need to take care of our own before helping other countries...who is sending money to us to help our homeless and hungry? No One...take time to see others point of view even if you don't agree

Why do you need our opinion?
