Is Roger Ebert a robot?

I saw him on tv today. When did he become a robot?

He had cancer and his lower face and jaw have been surgically reconstructed. He cannot eat or drink and must use a feeding tube. Apparently he can now speak using some electronic device to create sounds.

I read an editorial he had written about four months ago how his life had changed. I wish I had saved it or could now find it, but I can't.
