If things turn out to warrant a suspension, it seems Roger Goodell will be screwed no matter what he does. If he suspends Brett Favre, there's going to be all the Favre cronies out for blood becuase Goodell ended "the Streak." John Madden might even put a hit out on Goodell. On top of that, some people are saying Favre doesn't even finish the season if he gets suspended and just retires. So that will anger a great deal of people.

If Goodell doesn't suspend Favre, it will look like he's showing favoritism to the "Golden Child(Grandfather)." There will be thousands of fans who blast him for that.

So how will this affect Goodell in the short/long run?

What is the best thing he can do to not alienate fans in a time where many fans are already troubled by the state of the NFL? (I.e. fans already angry about a potential lockout, player holdouts, high ticket prices, and blackouts etc.)
@devilish

I think you're correct, but do you really think people have that much sense? You know how fandom changes the way people feel and there are few people who can think logically about things.
