GM announced its plan for SAAB yesterday. Essentially, having taken too long to make a decision to sell the company, it now has no one who wants to buy it. Sales fell to under 100,000 units globally in 2008 with sales in a free-fall.

GM essentially told Sweden to pick up the mess or watch the company go bankrupt by the end of February. Sweden responding saying it is not a welfare state and was not in the business of running automobile companies. Besides, Sweden added, GM did not make money 19 of the 20 years it owned it (1995 was a good year) so why would Sweden ever succeed?

In a nutshell, it looks very bad for Saab owners rignt now. It appears the company could cease operatoins before the end of 2009. If that happens, parts will become very expensive (if they were not enough already) or impossible to find except where GM parts are used and can be substiuted.

I like my car which is reliable and gets great gas mileage, but it seems it may have no future and maybe unsupportable in a couple of years. What do others think? It seems that time has run out on Saab.
