Is sex painful for women?

I know this sounds like a question a 12 year-old asks but a friend of mine and I were talking about sex (as you do) and she told me that heterosexual sex is painful for women. I kind of get where she's coming from (hurhurhur) because when you think about it, women are being poked with something hard (hurhurhur) but I'm curious if my friend was just having a lend of me or whether there's something to that. Women, what can you tell me?
Addendum: Men, you do not know nearly as much about this as you think you do.
 
I hurt my GF as it first goes in, but do some warm ups and its fine
