Is tap water safe?

I don't like drinking tap water because i dont feel its as safe as bottled and boiled, but sometimes at restaurants i drink it because im just thirsty. Is tap water safe to drink? Can you get diseases like tape worm from it?
I like in Canada, Winnipeg if that helps.
 
You live in the land of clean water. Off hand I'd say that Canada is the safest place to drink the water. You get tape worms from under cooked meats, or raw fish.
