It's not true, that's one of the perversions that has torn Christianity down in the past two thousand years. God is just, and He expects us to follow the commandments we have been given. Accepting Christ is only a part of it; if we don't deserve salvation, we won't get it.

SEcret G, catholics do not say 'accept Jesus'. That sounds like watering down or weakening our Faith and Belief in Jesus Christ [re Apostles Creed]. It's Jesus who is going to accept us if we are worthy of his promises.
Yes, believers will be save subject to the cleansing in lower heaven [purgatory]'.
1 Cor 3:15 15 But if someone's work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire.
Once again, to repeat, when one's work is burned, one will suffer loss, but the person will be saved only thru fire. St Paul is very precise on purgatorial cleansing. So we could say, believers are saved forever but subjected to cleansing first. Can't escape purgatory.
