is the AR-15 assault rifle "no different from a hunting rifle?"?

Some gun freak told me the AR-15, which James Holmes used in the recent Aurora Batman shooting, is functionally identical to a regular hunting rifle. But the Wikipedia says they're used in the military! Which is true?

Well - you see, the AR-15 is a "black rifle." They really don't like being singled out for being black rifles, and so it's socially polite to say they're "no different from hunting rifles." Other popular things to say are "I've got plenty of black rifles!" Heck, some gun owners even put their stainless actions in *gasp!* black polymer stocks instead of good old blonde wood! Now THAT's progressive!

The AR-15 is not used in the military. The M16 and M4 are which are variants of that design. So it's half true. They are the same platform but not the same gun due to key differences in the internal design of the receiver and the trigger group. A lot of parts outside of how the gun functions can be swapped out. You would have to open the gun up and look at the internals to notice the difference in receiver and trigger design. You can't tell from the outside as it looks identical. 'Look' is not 'is'. The AR-15 is not an automatic weapon and contrary to popular belief by the ignoreant cannot be converted to fire full auto or burst.

The AR-15 is a sporting rifle and hunting is one of the applications it can be used in.

First off the AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle, even Wikipedia gets that correct.
"An assault rifle is an AUTOMATIC rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine" The AR-15 is a semi-auto sporting rifle

According to the left wing MSM, one is an "assault" rifle. Can you guess which(rhetorical question)

They function the same, but one has a wood stock, and the other synthetic.

To poke fun at the ignorance of the MSM. Firearms owners often sarcastically refer to rifles with a synthetic stock, as Evil Black Rifles(EBR).

It is not different than any other standard semi auto .223. Just because a gun looks more threatening than another gun does not mean anything. This f*cking coward son of a b*tch could have used a pink .223 with fluffy bunnies on the gun and caused the same devastation.

In it original make up it was a fully automatic military assault weapon, later modified for non-military use by turning it into a semi-automatic supposely with something of a fixed magazine, apparently the fix magazine model has now been modified to allow for the removal and exchange of magazines. As to my take on the AR-15 being a hunting rifle I will pass on to you the same commend I made to and other individual who inquired amount another rifle with the AK frame.
The point of the AK/AR type rifle is to ensure adequate fire power not necessarily accuracy. It's a case of spray, and pray that you hit. If it's accuracy and range you are looking for, you would be better off with a more stable receiver and a larger bullet at least .308 caliber. I'm always amused with those who talk hunting, and look with longing at semi-automatic rifles with a large magazine capacities, my statement to them is, " What's wrong can't hit the game with the first shoot." Hunting is about having the patience and taking the time to make the proper shot placement, its about making a clean quick kill, in most cases that is usually achieved by one well placed bullet. Attempting to machine gun or buckshot a fleeing deer as it streams through the woods shows a real want of hunting ethics.
