Is the BitTorrent protocol bad for your computer?

A friend got his computer fixed at Best Buy a while ago, and they told him his computer couldn't get onto the internet because of BitTorrent, or Limewire, or some program that used the same protocol.

Now, I don't trust BitTorrent completely, but I trust Best Buy even less. Is BitTorrent itself bad for computers?
