Is the rumor about the kid who died after drinking 8 bottles of coke true?

I know too much soda can be dangerous but I read this email forwarded to me. It was about students in a college having a competition of who can drink more coke. It said that the student who won died at the same time. Is this true? Any proof? If so, why?
