Is there a way to use my scanner to create a tracing table/ light box?

I am trying to trace some drawings I did to draw them again and don't have access to a tracing table. I noticed earlier while scanning something that there's enough light coming from my scanner and a hard enough surface to be able to use it as an effective tracing table. Is there a way to keep the light on while not scanning something?

Full details: I have a HP Photosmart C4780
