Is there anyway i can transport my desktop pics to my iphone?

I dont know if i updating will cause itunes to delete the old photos i got on there.will they be gone? (i havent updated it since a LONG time...its on version 2 sumthin.ive only updated ipod nanos not an ipod touch.help?
