I bought my father a stationary bike and it arrived yesterday. He is 52 and out of shape, so I figured this would be perfect for him since he also loves his television. He told me he used it for a half hour and he broke a little sweat. He likes it. The problem is when he told me he burned 18 calories. I laughed. I asked him how far he went, he said 7 miles. It didn't sound right, so I told him about reaching an optimum heart rate and all that. So I went over and used it. I traveled 13 miles with an average speed of around 22 mph and had my heart rate between 145 and 150. It took me little over 30 minutes. The resistance goes from 1 to 8. I don't know what value they represent. Anyways, the readout said I burned about 30 calories. I am no expert nor do I consider myself even a novice, but does this sound correct? I was under the impression someone could burn more calories watching television.
