Shakespeare’s Hamlet recounts the acts of vengeance taken by Hamlet regarding his father’s murder. The obvious themes of treachery and revenge provide a foundation for the plot of this tragedy, but the depth of the play is revealed through Hamlet. The course of Hamlet’s emotions, ranging from grief to feigned madness, is vividly portrayed with soliloquy. Hamlet grieves his father’s death and shows disappointment at Gertrude’s incestuous marriage in the quote “So excellent a king, that was to this Hyperion to a satyr, so loving to my mother.”(1.2.143-144) Hamlet uses symbolism to refer to King Hamlet as a god compared to Claudius, a goat like creature. Hamlet provides a complex personality for psychoanalytical criticism with his desire to kill Claudius, yet his hesitance to do so. Hamlet’s lunacy is analyzed from different perspectives, each originating from his conscience. Hamlet’s disposition towards moral corruption is revealed from the context of his soliloquies, usage of symbolism, and unconscious desires.
