Is this a good plot line for a short story?
I'm not sure if this would be the right section, but you guy read, right? I've decided to make my first attempt at a [complete] short story. It will fit into a universe I'm also designing which allows for some supernatural elements but exists in an otherwise mundane world (no vampires, wizards, secret societies of elves, etc.) This is the plot that I've devised and I want to get some feed back on it. This is a very loose plot line, and I'm sort-of basing it on a story I read in elementary school about a fish that granted wishes iirc to a sailor. This is not meant to be a children's story. ---- Man discovers genie-type critter. (Won't be called a genie, but will be some sentient thing that can grant wishes if it wants to.) It offers to grant three wishes in three years, one per year. (To allow substance to be added to the story.) First wish is for financial stability. He starts a business, it does well. Something is missing. Second wish is for love. He falls in love with and marries one of his regular customers, a college crush that he was close to but had lost contact with. Third wish is for power. He runs for office (mayor, senate, congress, etc.) and wins. Then he becomes corrupt and looses everything. On the fourth anniversary of his first wish, the genie offers to let him make a fourth wish to try and fix everything. It will also cancel his other wishes. Fourth wish is for happiness. He becomes his twenty-one year old self again and in the same time period, his memories intact. This time, full of youth and exuberance (cliché?), he marries the same woman (before he losses contact with her) at a much earlier stage in his life and becomes more successful than he had been before. He decides against running for office.
