Is this plagiarism.............?

I have to do english coursework and write a short, original story.
I'm awful at stuff like this, so I just took an idea from a story I have read once before and used that.
I changed the setting, the characters, and rewrote it all. The only thing that is similar now is the plot.
Is this cheating?

I wouldn't say so, a lot of authors do something like that. But, be careful not to be too close. If it's like the same chapter to chapter w/ different characters, that might be a bit much. I had to do something like this and I took a story I like but changed the ending a lot cuz I didn't really like the book's real ending. Try changing it up, give it a plot twist.
