...however, as everyone knows 1998 was an extraordinarily hot year, due almost entirely to one of the strongest El Niño events ever recorded.
So...throwing out the 1998 outlier, isn't the trend one of warming? (Just put your hand over 1998, and check from 1999 to 2008. You should be able to see that a 'best line fit' would give an overall increasing trend.)
Isn't this just good statistical practice? Throwing out outliers to get the best fit trend?
