jetta vw 2004 airbag light?

The car died. When mechanic did check the battery was dead so he recharged. he said the alternator was the problem (which is probably why the battery went completely dead) and so I had it replaced.The battery was then overcharged by the alternator. so then I had it replaced too.. when I drove away this time the airbag symbol (light) on the dash was on. And it is still on now. Does anyone know why/ or what I can do/ what my options are? and perhaps if theres a few things I can check myself first before assuming I have to pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed..
