The Boston Red Sox need depth in the outfield. On Wednesday, they added some depth by signing Jonny Gomes to a two-year deal worth $10 million. Gomes played 99 games for the Oakland A’s last season. He finished the season with 18 homers, 47 RBIs and a .262 batting average.
Gomes is a good story because he was nearly out of baseball after a poor 2011 campaign. However, he signed with the A’s for $1 million last season and now has been able to cash in with a big market team.
While Gomes is unlikely to start in Boston, he’ll play both left field and right field and should see regular duty. Not only is he quality depth, he’s regarded as having great character in the locker room.
