Keeping Verizon or Switching?

So I originally had Alltel but of course Verizon bought them out. Anyways, I'm thinking about switching to ATT or something else but I don't know if either will be better service. I like Verizon except that I bought a smartphone from alltel and I want to get a different phone in order to get a cheaper plan. So really I'm asking if I should stick with Verizon because it's better overall(if not who has better coverage and overall service), and if I stick with verizon should I wait til next september when I can upgrade or is there another way for me to get a different phone and change my plan without having to pay a lot in termination fees. Thanks
