Louisiana lawmakers and women's health advocacy groups are working to initiate and expand state programs aimed at reducing teen births, births to unmarried women and premature births, the Shreveport Times reports. Compared with the nation as a whole, Louisiana has higher rates of births in each of the three categories, according to the Times. State data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that nearly 51% of Louisiana births in 2007 were to single women, up one percentage point from 2006.
