Okay. So I've owned this laptop a couple years. Always played DVDs just fine. Recentl I noticed in DivX player, videos (any kind; DivX, XVid, normal MPG, AVI, etc) there is sound but no video. Yes, it's the latest version.

Then I tried playing a DVD i've played before, and the same thing, in WinDVD. Other DVDs, same result.

Normal videos play just fine in other players like Windows Media Player and ZoomPlayer. I can't get WMP to play DVDs for some reason... something about copyright, even though the DVDs are legal.

What the HELL?
Reinstalling didn't work.

try unistalling divix and re-installing, it that should fix it

hope this helps!!

Most likely some important file were erased or corrupted somewhere that all your media programmes use to play video files.

DVD's require special software decoding to allow them to work (ie. installing a new DVD drive won't actually let you play DVDs, you need software with the encoder). This software is proprietary, and requires licensing fees to be incorporated into DVD viewing programmes.

Since you have a copy of winDvd, I would recommend uninstalling WinDvd and reinstalling it. If it has the encoder software than it should reinstall it automatically and you should be fine again.

Alternatively, you can get yourself the VLC media player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ , which is a free media player that can play pretty much any video or audio file (comes in handy!), including DVDs. Just install, open the programme, go to File, open disc, and presto. If VLC can't play the DVDs, than most likely you have some other problem.

Give those two options a shot, and report back. Hopefully that will work.

Good luck!
