Laptop runs slow after internet connection.?

I have an Aspire 1640 laptop. I worked on it since 3 years with out the internet until last 2 months. Now the system responds very slowly even if i am to open a word document. I have AVG virus software and i run it frequently.
I have disabled the cookies in the internet options but still it dosent help.
 
My guesses are it isn't the internet. Likewise here are a few possible scenarios.

1) Did you install avg anti virus, only after your hook up to the net?

If so AVG might be the culprit, you do know that the program is resource intensive and with only 256mb of ram, it ain't sufficient for a stable o/s environment to work with.

2) Probably lots of temp files and processes running at the back end.

I would suggest you to download ccleaner, and try to cleanup the temp files and registry. Like wise it has functionality to disable startup task which you do not need. The better solution would still be to upgrade your rams, or get a new notebook.
