Lower latency on M-Audio Audiophile 2496?

new card just arrived and i wanted to be able to monitor and record my guitar through the analogue inputs. At the moment i am using a free VST host program called vsthost and i have a few VSTs for guitar effects.

I noticed that the latency was very high as soon as i started playing, so carried out a test in audacity. I get about 180 milliseconds which i believe is far too high as i hear people can reach less than 10 ms. I have tried adjusting Hz and samples in the control panel, but they don't make any noticeable difference.

What can i do to lower this latency?

Also, my computer spec is up to date so i don't think the problem is there:
Intel core i5 quad core @ 3.1GHz
Good Gigabyte motherboard (cant remember model)
60GB SSD (515Gb/s) - primary drive
6GB DDR3 memory
ATI graphics card 1GB GDDR5

any help would be greatly appriciated
yes, forgot to mention, i'm running windows 7 64 bit with the latest drivers from the manufacturers website

I agree that 180ms seems a little high but if you have checked you have configured the device correctly then contacting their technical support would be the next step. What DMA Buffer size have you selected? Although setting a higher buffer size will help remove popping sounds and clicks, it will also increase the latency somewhat. It is all a question of getting the right balance. You need to download low latency ASIO drivers, if the sound card supports them. you can download the latest drivers [that include the low latency ASIO driver] from this link: http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/Audiophile2496.html
