Macbook Pro or Macbook Air?

Specs-wise, seems like they're pretty similar. Even the price is about the same. But one area that a friend brought up is that a Pro will last longer. He's had his since 2006 and says it still runs great. Is this a viable difference between a Pro and an Air or is the current model of the Air capable of performing like new in seven years?
