So a friend of mine wanted me to set up his laptop (I used to be a PC tech so I'm pretty good). It's a Toshiba satellite running vista home premium.

I hooked him up with good antivirus (Kaspersky IS). I also had a multi-license copy of office 07 that I installed. I went through the start-ups and cleaned up unnecessary junk. Everything was good and the computer was very quick when I was done, even with all of the effects maxed.

The next day he thanked me, but insisted I install OpenOffice for him. Apparently he needed it, despite already having Office.

So I did 3 things
1. installed open office 3.0
2. updated his Internet security
3. Disabled UAC (it was getting annoying as hell)

Everything looked good. So I went to shut down. Then automatic update kicked in and literally installed 25 or more updates on the spot. I was shocked, because this isn't a new computer at all and it seemed weird that Microsoft would release over 25 updates in one day.

Anyhow I let it run its course. When I rebooted, however, I noticed a HUGE drop in performance. The machine is literally running at 1/50th it's original speed. Opening the "My Computer" screen takes minutes. ( Remember Windows 95 during an AOL login? Yeah....it's slower than that... :)

I suppose I could remove the installations I did one by one, but counting the updates and factoring in the new speed of the computer, it would take DAYS to undo the changes (yeah, it's that slow now).

Has anyone else run into a similar problem? Is it Windows Update or a compatibility issue with OpenOffice3.0?

Or is this just the Mojave experience they were talking about? :)
