I started martial arts to get stronger, tougher, and to start fighting as a sport. I'm really slender, as well. I've been training at a dojo for around a month and a half. I'm proficient at basic strikes, kicks, and combos in the air, but when it comes to actual punching and defending against a person, I freeze up, and do not do good at all.
Lots of this is probably because I'm new and I'm sure I will get better with time and as muscle memory starts kicking in. I find myself thinking too much and not able to bob and weave successfully. It's just all around sketchy.
I've decided its time to get help from a friend who has some background in martial arts. I'm hoping that will help build my muscle memory and make it feel a LOT more natural with just a few short hours of practice.
Now to the point - I was talking to my instructor about that and he started mentioning an article he read a while back about how Wrestlers, football players, etc will almost always beat martial artists because they practice how they play, and martial artists practice in the air, so when it comes to contact fighting, it doesn't work as well. Would people generally agree with this? Is martial arts better practiced in the air and then applied?
