Martial Arts (restarting after 3 years)?

I haven't taken it in 3 years, I told my old school I was going to come back, they said that I can continue where I left off but get brought back up to speed so I can get back to where I was before I left. I want to start again as a white belt, is that a smart thing to do? Anyone else out there with Martial Arts experience, what do you think would be best?
I took Korean style of Tae Kwon Do. Made it up to Green Belt

It depends how long you studied for in the first place. I admire the fact though that you would prefer to start out as a white belt again to relearn all the materials, as some people just want to run to shodan as fast as possible. Muscle memory only lasts seven days (or so I've heard), however. You do not have to restart, however I would recommend taking a year or so to re-dedicate yourself before advancing, making sure your body remembers everything. Although again, this all depends mainly on how advanced you were when you quit.

I've done this myself actually, but for longer more like 6-7 years, but after that long I've felt that I would like to restart from scratch. All things considered, if you are interested by all means continue from where you left off, starting from scratch should only be considered if you feel that you have forgotten the basics completely.

Start as a white belt.
If you are at a school that charges for testing then leave them and go to a new school.
