Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire mayor of New York, is Silicon Valley's ideal presidential candidate. He's socially liberal, technocratic, runs his city like a business, and understands entrepreneurs, having made his fortune with the market data terminals that bear his name. It's no wonder that Bloomberg, who is flirting with the idea of an independent presidential bid, has more powerful friends in Silicon Valley than any of the declared candidates. Portfolio reports that Sandy Robertson, the banker who was Bill Clinton's most prominent Valley backer but has not signed up with Hillary, hosted a dinner for Bloomberg last Sunday. Among the guests: Google's Sergey Brin, and his wife, Anne Wojcicki. Too bad the technocratic New York mayor, the tech industry's dream candidate, will almost certainly remain just that, a dream.
