Michael Pineda of the New York Yankees will miss the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury. And the news could be even worse for Pineda and Yankees fans: The star pitcher’s career could be over.
The reason why Pineda may be history is the type of injury he suffered. In general, shoulder injuries are very bad for pitching prospects. A torn labrum, Pineda’s injury, is the worst type of shoulder injury. In other words, this has become the worst possible scenario.
The Yankees acquired Pineda in the offseason from the Seattle Mariners in a deal that sent star hitting prospect Jesus Montero to the Mariners. Pineda had a stellar rookie season last year and was destined to become the team’s number two starter behind CC Sabathia.
Now? Pineda faces a long road to ever returning to the mound. The Mariners, on the other hand, have to feel lucky that they made the trade when they did.
