Hi,
I am using my own car for business travels. I get a monthly car allowance from my employer. I can claim a mileage allowance of 10 p per mile for my business travels. The IR approved mileage allowance is 40 p per mile. in such case have i understood it right that the 30 p per mile can be claimed from IR or it is the tax relief on 30 p per mile.

THe IR allows UP to 40p per mile (it may be slightly less or more these days) to be claimed as business mileage. Your employer allows you to claim 10 p per mile (seems v low - are you sure they are not charging you the mileage allowance as if you had a company car?).

The info you mention above has got nothing to do with tax relief or the Inland Revenue.
