Minecraft newbie SSP or SMP?

I just joined minecraft, and have been planning out my house/base. My problem is, I don't know if I should build it in SSP or in SMP. Are the two interchangable? For example if I build a house in Single will it also be in Multiplayer? Also, do I have to set up my own server on multiplayer? I'm really new to this, so please help!
 
If you build a house in Single player it won't be in multiplayer unless you make copy your single player world and make a multiplayer server with that world. I don't know how to do that though.
