...mushrooms, that you should just....
wipe them off with a paper towel, instead of washing the dirt off.

I do not feel comfortable with this, so I wash mine anyway, and let them sit out on a paper towel to dry.

Does anybody know why we are told not to wash them? I have seen this done on many shows.

How do you feel about it, and what do you do?
