Mortal Kombat VS DC Fatalities?

In Mortal Kombat VS DC for the PS3, do you have to unlock something in particular to be able to use the fatalities and brutalities? I can't figure out why neither of these are working for me.
 
not really they are just a pain to use a lot of button mashing for just one of them.
