[QUOTE="fiddlefaddle123, post: 1509741, member: 596283"] ok so one day out of no where, my car (2005 pontiac sunfire) sprung a power steering leak. at first i didnt know what was really going on because there was just smoke coming from underneath the car(under the exhaust pipe below the exhaust manifold). so at this point the leak was pretty small. took about a day for it drain out completely. the only reason i knew it was empty was because i was minute away from my house when the steering started to groan. my mechanic says it could be a clamp or hose. so i checked every hose, checked the rack and i see some dampeness but no clear sign of a leak. so then i was told by the guys at my local NAPA that i should add Lucas brand ps stop leak and that it works like wonders. so being skeptical i still bought it (small one), and topped the reservoir with it when it was low on fluid. i waited and waited. turned the wheel slowly a bit then after a few minutes the leak just drained everything out of the reservoir within like 5 minutes. and the steering locked up with only a tiny bit of movement from the wheel. i added fluid but the steering was still stiff so i waited til the next day because it was getting dark out. the next day the steering came back slowly as i tried to back out of the drive way (had to move the car). so now the leak is still there but along with it the steering is loose now. whats going on? and did i make the situation worse than before? Also i think the leak is coming from one of the pressure hoses or ps rack directly beneath the exhaust pipe. because the only dripping i see is from the ps fluid running down the underside of the exhaust pipe where it is smoking. could it b possible the rack and or hose rubbed with the exhaust piping and caused the leak? i thought it could of been the boot but its not leaking while the leak is present although the one closest to the exhaust pipe is damp. also the car has only 65000 miles on it. isnt this too soon for the power steering to go down hill? i've never had any problems with this car until now.
