My 2001 Hyundai Elantra won't drive in reverse?

I have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS with about 60000 miles on it. Whenever I want to go in reverse, I put it in gear but then nothing happens. I step on the gas but still nothing happens. It sounds like the engine is just revving. It has progressively gotten worse to the point where it no longer works at all. What's wrong? Any ideas?
 
does it act as it would in neutral?
You def. need to take it somewhere if you don't think you can fix it yourself. There is a pretty good chance there is a transmission issue that can lead to more problems then reverse. either way i'm pretty sure its illegal to drive a car with an issue such as that
