My 2002 Mazda Protege won't shift out of park?

Today, I drove to my babysitting job, got out of the car, but realized my parking job wasn't great, so I got back in the car to move. I started the engine and went down to put my car in reverse, but I cannot fully contract the button that is used to change gears, so my car is stuck. I have never had any other problems with my car and it has only 37,000 miles. Is there any way I can fix this problem?
