My 2002 Volvo break pedal is squeaking: like letting out air?

Any idea what this may be. The pedal squeaks like a leaking balloon and if I tap it, it generally stops but it is fairly persistant. At first I thought it was the air conditioner but no.

A) Any ideas what it may be
B) Any idea if this is serious?
