my 2g itouch won't back up. what should i do?

i have done almost everything imaginable to get it to work, but nothing. my itunes is the current version. i have tried restarting my computer, restarting itunes, replugging in my itouch. everything. i try to update the iOS to 4, but it starts backing up my ipod, and then freezes after 1 bar. what should i do?
