My 66 vw bug beetle dies when put in in gear?

I was wondering if someone can help me. I just recently sold my 66 vw bug has a 1600 dual port to my brother in law, he took the car about 500 miles away, but the car was shutting down every hour or so. Finally the car just died and we found out that the battery got unplogged and the oil cap got loose and sprayed oil all over the engine. After cleaning it, we made it run on, but every time he places the gear the engine dies. I don't know what it is. The carb seems to be fine but I'm going to clean it tomorrow. My brother just reconected the coil. Could it be that the clutch is going out? He can put in gear but as soon as he let's go of the clutch the car dies. Could it be that tranny went bad? I have never heard of a bug tranny braking. Or maybe the coil is misswired?
