My '94 Saturn SW2, with 50K miles. Engine fans comes on alot when in traffic. But...

...in cold weather too.? Only 50K miles, runs good, but engine electric fans comes on anytime I'm in slow traffic. Is this normal, in winter weather? Is that electric fan the main source of cooling the engine?
Also, my automatic trans slips, when going into reverse.
 
Yes, the fans still run in winter, especially in slow traffic as the air flow through radiator is minimal. Check you fluid level in the transmission.
 
your fan will come on if you set you heat to defrost and some times even in the winter if stoped it will come on.as for your trans that dont sound good may need to be rebiult
