My '96 Chevy Oldsmobile won't turn over, any help?

I just bought a brand new battery for it, and whenever I connect the new battery it either makes a really loud noise, or if it doesn't, it just won't turn over. I know that something is wrong, and just I want to know if anyone will know what's wrong with it, before I take it to a mechanic. Any advice?
 
maybe a bad started or battery cable. engine could be locked up or torque convert is locked up.
