My Blackberry Flip 8230 won't make any sounds!?

My phone is relatively new and foreign to me. The volume is set to normal, and the advanced settings appear to be correct. It won't ring, sound an alarm, or an alert. Am I missing something? Anyone ever had this happen to their blackberry?
